Course Development Partnerships

The Center for Online Learning provides individualized faculty support for the development and continuous improvement of fully online, blended, and in-person courses as well as support for full development of online degree programs.

Whether the goal is developing a new course, redesigning, or adding enhancements to an existing one, the center offers course development services to help achieve the established objectives. Designing an online course is a team effort between the faculty member, the Instructional Designer and a media developer. Our instructional designers are available to assist with all phases of the course development process including planning, identifying resources and overall design as well as the development of learning activities, assessments, and content materials for your course.

Developing an Online Course with an Instructional Designer

The Center for Online Learning supports online course development by partnering an instructional designer with you as the faculty course developer.

The Instructional Designer will consult and collaborate with you as you design, re-design or change the modality of your course. Whether developing an online, blended, or an in-person course, the ID and other COL staff will support you through a process tailored to the needs of your project. This process will include reflection on the strengths and challenges of the existing course, alignment of outcomes and assessments, activities, and content, and identification of enhancements to improve the student experience.

Throughout the course development process, we provide resources and support customized to your experience and goals. Generally, you can expect to have a series of meetings with your COL ID partner, receive individualized support, and a wealth of resources, templates, and examples.

Common course development partnership support includes:

  • a sequence of recommended consultations to guide the development process
  • recommended course development resources for the faculty member
  • checklists and templates to streamline the project
  • a Moodle course template that incorporates quality course design standards
  • building out the content in the Moodle course shell
  • an informal quality course design review

Program Development

Are you planning on developing an entire degree program online? The Center for Online Learning can partner with your program to offer support and assistance throughout the development process.

Students tend to be most successful in online programs when there is consistency across the courses in their program. Prior to developing individual courses, we will partner with the program director and faculty to facilitate a conversation about the program plan and discuss any elements they wish to keep consistent across courses. This may include program specific resources, technologies, or course navigation elements.

Once a Program Plan has been determined, individual faculty course developers will collaborate with an instructional designer to design and develop an online course. The instructional designer will assist with the overall design of the course, creating or advising about online assessments, developing multimedia materials, and ensuring the developed course meets FPU’s quality design standards.
